Breffni is a unique and fascinating countryside retreat.
Our Story

Here at Breffni Cottages in Leitrim, Ireland, we like to see and do things a little differently. This historic O’Rourke site, the seat, stronghold, and principal headquarters of the O'Rourkes, the Kings of Brieifne, is nestled in the grounds of an ancient castle and the meandering River Bonet on the outskirts of picturesque Dromahair. It is in one of the most beautiful, unspoilt regions of Ireland, and was established in the 10th century by the O’Rourkes.

The O’Rourke site was (and still is) famous for its hospitality. From the ancient poem, “O’Rourke’s Noble Feast,” which took place here on this very ground, come the prophetic words:

Pléaráca na Ruarcach i gcuimhne gach uile dhuine Dá dtiocfaidh, dá dtáinic, 's dá maireann go fóill (The revels of O'Rourke are in the memory of every person who will come, who has come, and who lives yet).

The grounds are spectacular, with fishing for wild Irish salmon, perch, or trout at hand on our 14-kilometer stretch of the River Bonet. On our ancient and magical site, we work hard to give you a taste of the real Irish welcome. Culture abounds in close vicinity, with castles and cloisters, megalithic tombs and cairns. Yeats was here often, writing “The Man who Dreamed of Faeryland”: He stood among a crowd at Dromahair; His heart hung all upon a silken dress, And he had known at last some tenderness, Before earth took him to her stony care.
